The Magnetar UDP900 is an upgraded version of the UDP800 with a clear focus on music playback. It plays 4K UHD discs with Dolby Vision and HDR10+, but internally it uses two completely separate digital-to-analog converter sections for stereo and multi-channel sound. This makes it ideal for listeners who value a player's music quality at least as much as its image reproduction.
Two DAC Sections for Stereo and Multi-channel
An ESS9038PRO converter is used for two-channel playback, implemented as both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs. For multi-channel operation, a separate ESS9028PRO converter with 7.1 RCA outputs is available. Those who wish to play digital music directly from a computer can do so via the XMOS USB audio input, without the detour of a disc or network.
Elaborate Board Architecture for Low-Noise Operation
The six-layer main board is manufactured using gold immersion technology and uses a high-precision, low-noise TCXO quartz oscillator as well as a doubled LDO voltage regulation compared to the UDP800. Components from Murata and TDK, as well as NCC capacitors, further reduce interference. The two audio boards are designed as separate 4-layer PCBs with separate channel routing, equipped with capacitors from ELNA and NCC, as well as Red-WIMA and ELNA-SILMIC-II components, and are powered by their own linear power supply module.
Toroidal Transformer for the Analog Section
The analog audio supply is handled by its own 60-watt toroidal transformer with imported core material, oxygen-free copper winding, metallic shielding, and complete epoxy potting. This design reduces vibrations and heat generation and is separate from the power supply for the rest of the electronics.
Solid Aluminum Casing
The casing is made entirely of aluminum alloy and is designed as a reinforced, double-layer chassis. The most important internal components are individually metal-shielded to reduce vibrations, operating noise, and magnetic interference. Measuring 445 × 321 × 133 mm (including feet) and weighing around 15.4 kg, the UDP900 is noticeably more massive than the UDP800.
Formats, Storage, and Network
The UDP900 reads UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, BD-R/RE, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD, CD, as well as writable CD and DVD variants. Hard drives up to 16 TB can be connected via USB 3.0, and music, image, and video files can be accessed over the network via DLNA, SMB, or NFS - including common formats such as MKV, FLAC, DSD, and WAV.
